Why these ten words?

They are everyday things a toddler sees, hears and points at: animals from picture books, food at the table, a ball, a tree, a colour and a first number. Short, concrete words like these are easy to show with a picture and easy to repeat, in any language.

Want more? Every language page has 45 words in nine groups (animals, food, things at home, nature, colours, numbers, people, action words and flags), and the app has 720+.

Questions parents ask

What are the first words to teach a toddler?

Everyday, concrete words work best: animals (dog, cat, cow), food (milk, banana), toys and things at home (ball, bed), nature (tree), colours and small numbers. They are easy to show with a picture and easy to repeat.

How do you say cow in different languages?

Cow is vaca in Spanish, vache in French, Kuh in German, krava in Croatian, गाय in Hindi, 牛 in Chinese, بقرة in Arabic, പശു in Malayalam. The table on this page has it in every language, with audio.

Can my child learn words in two languages at once?

Yes. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association says using your languages with your child "will not confuse your child". In EveryLingo every picture can show the word in two languages, each with its own sound.
