How to teach English and Japanese together

Children can build two vocabularies from the start; they do not need to know one language first. Keep it short and everyday: name the cow in Japanese and in English while you look at the same picture, and let the games bring the words back.

Many families split it naturally, for example Japanese with one parent or grandparent and English with the other, or Japanese at home and English outside. Any split works if your child hears both often.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association says using your languages with your child "will not confuse your child" or "slow down their learning". Source: ASHA, Learning More Than One Language.

Questions parents ask

Can my toddler learn English and Japanese at the same time?

Yes. A child does not need to learn one language first. In EveryLingo every picture shows the word in English and Japanese at once, each with its own sound, and you can switch to one language anytime.

How do you say dog in Japanese?

Dog is 犬 in Japanese. Cat is 猫 and cow is 牛. You can hear all three on this page.

Can I record Japanese words in my own voice?

Yes. You can replace any recording with your own voice, or a grandparent's, and make new cards with your own photos, in Japanese, English or a family dialect.
