How to teach your child a language you don't speak

Maybe it's your partner's language, your grandparents' language that you never fully learned, or simply a language you want your child to have. You don't need to be fluent to start: you need the words, the sounds, and a little every day.

Short answer

Start with first words, not grammar: everyday things like dog, milk and ball. Use a source with audio so your child hears the right pronunciation (EveryLingo has audio for every ready-made word in 142 language options), learn alongside your child, and invite speakers such as grandparents to record words in their own voice.

Four steps that work

1. Start with first words

Animals, food, toys, colours, numbers: words your child can see and point at.

2. Let the audio lead

Play the word, then say it. Your child hears the correct sound every time, even when your accent isn't perfect.

3. Learn together

You don't have to know it first. Children love it when a parent learns with them.

4. Bring in real speakers

A grandparent, partner or friend can record words in EveryLingo in their own voice and dialect, from anywhere.

See it for your language: first words in every language, with audio.

Questions parents ask

Can I teach my child a language I don't speak?

Yes. Start with first words that have audio, learn alongside your child, and invite real speakers to help. Every ready-made word in EveryLingo has audio, so your child hears the pronunciation even if you are still learning.

Will my accent confuse my child?

Children hear many voices. Use recordings and, where you can, real speakers, alongside your own voice.

Can grandparents record words?

Yes. Anyone can record a word in their own voice and dialect, and the recording plays in all the games.
